AUTHORITY ORGANISES HEALTH AWARENESS TRAINING FOR STAFF

The Management of the Ogun-Oshun River Basin Development Authority has  organized a Health Awareness Training for members of Staff of the Authority.

 

The Managing Director/CEO, Otunba Olufemi Odumosu while declaring the training open said the training was aimed at providing the staff all necessary knowledge and skills to improve their health.

He said the training would discuss the important health issues such as hypertension, diabetes, cancers and oral health which affect many people in the society.

 

Odumosu said that these health conditions are serious health concerns that require proper management, lifestyle changes such as eating healthy diet, engaging in regular exercise and regular medical checkups in order to reduce the risk of developing these prevailing killer diseases.

 

“These are chronic diseases that require careful management in order to maintain good health and prevent serious complications” added the Managing Director.

 

The guest lecturer, Dr. Adekunle Nurudeen Obasanjo, a Consultant Orthopedics Surgeon, University College Hospital, Ibadan advised the staff to take a very good care of their health as the saying goes that “Health is Wealth.

He said people should stop patronizing quack doctors and ensure that they visit government registered hospitals anytime they have health challenges and that they should also do away from self-applied medication.

 

Dr. Obasanjo advised the gathering must especially those that are above 40 years of age to ensure that they visit the doctor for medical checkup at least twice in a year and do away from things such as junk foods, chemicals, drugs and non-prescribed medication that can damage their body and wellbeing.

 

The guest lecturer said exercises should be part of the daily routine for a better wellbeing of any individual and advised that moderate lifestyle and regular intercourse with legally married spouse is vital to prevent prostate cancer. He also advised the women to always carry out daily breast examinations for early detection of lumps.

 

Dr. Freedom Emovon, a Dental Surgeon, Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu on his part advised the gathering on the proper oral hygiene for a better wellbeing of a person.

He said the mouth is a vital organ of the body which enables a person to talk, eat, drink and also play many other functions for the better functionality of the body system.

 

He explained that the mouth requires a special care during cleaning and that people should do away from using sharp object on the mouth.

 

Dr. Emovon told the gathering that there are lots of microorganisms in the mouth especially on the tongue which if not properly cared for can move into the body to cause cancer.He said the cancer of the mouth can kill faster because it is close to the brain of the human.

 

He advised that people should choose the right tooth brush to clean their mouth and do away from self-medication in oral hygiene.

 

The Dental Surgeon advised that people should stop using their teeth to open cork on the bottle, avoid eating bones at certain age and that the things people eat affects the colour of their teeth such as agbo, coffee, wine and so on.

 

He also advised that when people detect any swelling or pain in their mouth, they should visit a registered doctor or dentist.Highlights of the day was a three kilometer walk, practical on how to use the tooth brush and physical body stretching exercises.
