ASHIRU SEEKS CONCERTED EFFORTS WITH OGUN ENVIRONMENT MINISTRY ON FLOOD CONTROL

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Ogun-Oshun River Basin Development Authority, Dr. Adedeji Ashiru (FNSE) has stressed the need for collaborative efforts with Ogun State Ministry of Environment to control flooding and implement measures to prevent potential flooding due to impending heavy rainfall.

Ashiru was speaking when a team from the Ministry led by Commissioner Ola Oresanya, Permanent Secretary, Mr. Olugbenga Oyeleye, and other Directors paid him a courtesy visit.

During the engaging and productive discussions, Ashiru outlined the proactive steps the Authority

has taken to mitigate flooding including Opening the gates at Oyan Dam since February to release water and create sufficient capacity to accommodate upstream water during high rainfall, Conducting regular maintenance and clearing of drainage channels to ensure unobstructed water flow, Collaborating with local communities to raise awareness on flood prevention and response measures, Implementing early warning systems to alert residents of potential flooding among others.

To further prevent flooding, he stated that the Authority proposes an expansion of  drainage infrastructure to accommodate increased water flow, in addition to Implementing flood-control structures, such as levees and floodwalls, in vulnerable areas, promote sustainable land use practices to reduce runoff and soil erosion and enhance public education and awareness campaigns on flood risk reduction and management.

"Consequently, the Authority looks forward to continued collaboration with the Ministry of Environment to ensure a comprehensive approach to flood control and mitigation to reduce the risk of flooding and protection of communities, " Ashiru concluded.
