ASHIRU CALLS FOR INSTITUTIONAL STRENGTHENING TO STEM CORRUPTION


...AS ICPC Inaugurates O-ORBDA's ACTU Committee




The Managing Director/ CEO, Ogun-Oshun River Basin Development Authority (O-ORBDA), Engr. Dr. Adedeji Ashiru FNSE FNIMechE FNIWE has called for the institutional strengthening of all anti-corruption agencies to address the root causes of corruption in the country.


Ashiru stated this while delivering his key note address during the inauguration of the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit and Sensitization lecture for staff of the O-ORBDA by the Independent 

Corrupt Practices Commission's (ICPC).


Ashiru said "Today, we, gather to tackle a pervasive issue that affects us all: corruption. It's a phenomenon that transcends borders, economies, and social classes. Corruption exists everywhere, impacting individuals and societies directly or indirectly, regardless of their background or status. "We must acknowledge that corruption's roots run deep, stemming from historical, political, and socio-economic factors. 


Lack of transparency, accountability, and effective institutions perpetuate this issue."


He further stated that the Nigerian government has taken significant steps to combat corruption, 

including: Legal Measures: Laws like the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission Act (2000), Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Act (2004), and Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act (2011) aimed to curb corrupt practices. Institutional Strengthening: Enhancing anti-corruption institutions to address corruption's root causes.


Speaking further, Ashiru said, "Despite these efforts, corruption remains a significant challenge. To overcome this, we must:Prioritize Transparency and Accountability: Ensure effective measures are in place to reduce corruption, such as. Address Weak Institutions: Strengthen legal frameworks and promote good governance. Foster Public Education and Awareness: Engage civil society and the private sector in promoting transparency and accountability.

Ultimately, combating corruption demands sustained collaboration from government, civil society, and public and private sectors."


In conclusion, he said, " We must work together to create a culture of transparency, accountability, and good governance".


Highlights of the day was a lecture on "Fighting Corruption in a Challenging Economy delivered by Mr. Tope Eegunjobi and the inauguration and oath taking for the new ACTU members conducted by Barrister Evans Peters.
